The brief to Camellia was to create an on-trend, highly-desirable seafront interior, synonymous with an enviable lifestyle. The main selling point of the other apartments – the panoramic views, also had to be uppermost in the minds of the team throughout the design process. As did the brief to portray the property as ideal for both residential use and for holiday lets the whole year round.
With its elevated position on a stunning and highly sought-after stretch of Cornish coastline, Fistral Blue more than lives up to its outstanding surroundings. The landmark development has quickly become an iconic feature of Fistral Bay – commanding uninterrupted views of its long and sandy west-facing shoreline.
The iconic building, comprising 18 high-specification apartments, certainly makes the most of this spectacular vista – allowing owners to take in the glorious expanse of Fistral International Surfing Beach, along with one of finest golf links courses in all of the West Country. Amidst this magnificent waterfront setting is the developers own apartment; a glass-dominated design that emphasises the light and airy interiors – complementing the superb backdrop and creating an unforgettable first impression. The apartment interior is luxurious, stylish and elegant – displaying an impressive attention to detail throughout.
In this corner of the UK, the wild seas of winter make for spectacular walks along the shoreline, enjoyed each year by hardy tourists undaunted by inclement weather. In summer, they’re replaced by hordes of surfers, as well as families taking advantage of the warm waters and sun drenched sands. Designers on the Camellia team had previously made the lifestyle choice to relocate to Cornwall and had immersed themselves in the varied local lifestyles and environments and so they fully appreciated everything the area had to offer. As the project evolved they faced multiple challenges…
The bare shell, comprising a two bedroom corner apartment, was set over one expansive floor. The lift had not yet been completed, so the access for all deliveries was via a spiral staircase. That meant negotiating huge boxes up winding stairs with limited space; this had to be taken into account when selecting furniture for the property. In addition, the time frame of just two months could only be extended by a few days to allow for the consignments of specially sourced furniture to arrive.
Despite it all, they succeeded in coming up with a versatile and flexible layout – making the property suitable for occupancy regardless of the time of year or weather. It also reflects the ever changing environment, making it as appropriate on a cold, wet day as it is when the apartment is basking in sunshine. The team’s focus on embracing the beach lifestyle influenced the flow of colours throughout the apartment. They opted to highlight the stunning sea views by using relaxing neutrals and blue tones, to connect with the landscape views.
In the living space, they chose wallpaper to represent water trickling across the sand as the tide goes out. Likewise, they opted for flowing, sketchy patterns on the cushions to symbolise the ripples of the water on the surface as well as the waving grass on the headland. The dynamic shapes within the furnishings were hand-picked to reflect the dramatic landscape. Carefully chosen understated styling and tailored details were used to create an interior which would appeal to all potential buyers.
To add interest and texture they introduced heavy wooden items – establishing natural elements synonymous with a rugged beach style, softening the contemporary nature of the apartment, whilst providing an enduring look. Designers also considered the flow between each area and imagined themselves in the potential buyer’s shoes to see how they would need the space to work for maximum efficiency. In contrast with the large, open plan layout of the apartment, the team then focused on the creation of intimate spaces.
One highlight was the unashamedly distinctive and luxurious ‘coffee area’, with the view across to Watergate bay. The mellow corner makes for a delightful space to unwind and take in the breath-taking scene. Once the marketing potential of Camellia’s innovative design became apparent to the client, the decision was taken to increase the budget to accommodate additional accessories to dress the apartment both for the developers private use and the photoshoot. Fully completed, the apartment now met the needs of discerning and design aware homebuyers and investors who would have to spend around £500,000 purchasing an apartment.
In the entrance hall, the insertion of subtle chrome ankle height wall lights and a pair of industrial design reclaimed timber mirrors, provide a hint of what is on offer. The natural appeal of a classic wood floor in the inviting living space was harmonised with vintage-style reclaimed timber and metal chests with a matching mirror. Seamless sleek lines of the classic white integrated handle kitchen, with double oven and built in microwave provided a glossy contemporary finish. And for formal dining – the recycled wooden table, with space for six, has contemporary white bucket dining chairs.
A large three-seater cream sofa with two matching chairs, was laid out to face the cream stone surround wall mounted fire. The addition of a fire was a subtle component added by the developer purely to provide the area with heat and not as an interior feature. The coffee area overlooking the floor-to-ceiling windows has deep-buttoned cube chairs in charcoal and taupe and a wooden coffee table – providing a quiet space to relax in. The elegance of the living space is matched by the timeless sophistication of the bedrooms. The master bedroom has been completed with complementary blue and neutral tones, with carved oak lamps and contemporary, white bedside chests and occasional accents of red. The bathroom and en-suite are fitted with luxury chrome fixtures and fittings – providing a practical, but calm and relaxed private area, boosted by rich wood and blues.
The fusion of space, furnishings and colour palette with the roles the apartments have to play throughout the year for their occupiers provides the last word in luxury in seaside living.
