How to Measure for Blinds

Measuring for Blinds

There are two types of fit to consider when measuring for window blinds: blinds that sit within the recess and blinds that sit outside.

A window recess is the inset area that your window sits in. Fitting your blind inside the recess can maximise space in your room, creating a window dressing that sits seamlessly in your interior and flat to your window. If your window has a recess you have the option of fitting the blind inside or outside. If there is no recess, then you’ll be measuring blinds to fit straight onto the wall.

Deciding where the blind will hang

When measuring for blinds, the first step is to make the decision on where you want your blind to hang. Before you reach for a tape measure, think about what suits your interior style. Do you want the contemporary, flush fit of a blind hanging neatly inside the window recess? If you are going to team it with curtains, then a recess fitted blind would make sense. Or would you prefer it to be fitted outside the recess, perhaps in place of curtains, maybe with second sheer blind instead?

Please note: If the window opens inwards, or if the window is not straight and its width or height varies by more than 20mm (3/4”) – as is the case with lovely old cottages and barns, then it will be necessary to fit the blind outside the recess.  Also as a general rule, if the recess has a depth smaller than 60mm it will be necessary to fit the blind outside the recess.

MEASURING FOR A RECESS FITTING:

  • Measure in millimetres and always use a metal tape measure for accuracy.
  • Measure the width of the recess at the top, the middle, and the bottom to identify any variations. Repeat this for the drop (top to bottom) measurements.
  • Quote the smallest width and drop sizes in millimetres on the order form.
  • Remember to quote ‘recess size’ on the measuring form and we will make an adjustment for a perfect fit when we manufacture your blind.

The above instructions also apply for roller and venetian blinds.

MEASURING OUTSIDE A WINDOW RECESS:

  • If the blind is being fitted outside the recess, you should allow it to extend approximately 100mm either side, and 100mm above and below the window.
  • Measure in millimetres and always use a metal tape measure for accuracy.
  • Measure the width of the window in three places; at the top, the middle, and the bottom to identify any variations. Repeat this for the drop (top to bottom) measurements.
  • Quote the largest width and drop sizes in millimetres on the order form.
  • Remember to quote ‘blind size’ on the measuring form.

The above instructions also apply for roller and venetian blinds.
