At the end of 2014 Camellia were approached by two developer brothers who were in need of a design practice to help dress the interior of their lovely old fishing cottage in the heart of St Ives. The owners wanted the design to reflect the heritage and location of their cottage on the coast, whilst also meeting the practical and physical requirements that a holiday let property demands. Ultimately they needed a relaxing and flexible accommodation option that would prove attractive as an exclusive holiday let.
Located centrally in the heart of St Ives, the cottage is full of Cornish charm which the owners were keen to capitalise on. The clients had seen Camellia’s previous project in St Ives, ‘St Ives Townhouse’ and wanted a similar rustic look for their property. Camellia were briefed to inject the cottage with the heritage of St Ives and were commissioned to furnish and install window treatments for the property which had already been decorated to high standards.
Set over three storeys the property compromises three bedrooms, one cloakroom with a bathroom and an open plan kitchen/diner with the main living space situated in the basement. The existing wooden ceiling beams had been painted white to add a sense of space, while walls and flooring had been treated in light neutral shades in order to reflect the amazing light found in the town. All of this provided Camellia with a perfect canvas from which to work – enabling the team to create a space that feels both contemporary and rustic.
The wow factor was achieved by introducing key pieces of furniture; such as a statement sofa in denim blue and coastal inspired fabrics in blues, oranges and greys – a colour scheme that was repeated throughout the property on artwork, fabrics and furniture. The refurbishment came with all the usual challenges of a small Cornish cottage, such as wonky walls and floors and problematic access. However, the project management team were easily able to overcome these issues having previous experience and knowledge of the town.
The project was completed on time, just before the Easter holidays allowing the owners to make the most of the start of the rental season in St Ives.
